Project Overview

For the wastewater and waste project, Sanya Mali (Clean Mali), of the GIZ, a consultant from the Collective (formerly WASTE COOP), was asked to work with new businesses working in solid waste to offer them advice on how to become sustainable and profitable.

The Challenge

Businesses in solid waste management face many challenges, it is not easy to become a profitable company especially if you are knew in the field.

Our Approach

With the knowledge gathered around the opportunities of each type of businesses and the individual wishes of the entrepreneurs the adviser offered tailor made analysis on the feasibility of their activities and advice on how to advance.

The steps toward this included:
• In preparation a desk research on innovative reuse and recycling activities for various types of waste, such as organic waste, textile waste and plastic waste.
• Analysis of the place on the value chain for the various waste activities
• Visits of the businesses and assessment of plans and opportunities,
• Personalised business opportunities both technical and economical.

What We Delivered

The project resulted in a set of fact sheets on recycling activities and a presentation around return of investment for small businesses.

Advise toward young entrepreneurs to improve their businesses and find their place in the value chain.

Impact & Outcomes

Several businesses managed to improve their output as their quality of recycled material went up.

In some case there is ongoing contact and support with the entrepreneurs who are continuing to work successfully and slowly growing and expanding.

Looking Ahead

While support to the upcoming entrepreneurs can be very effective and useful, the involvement of the local government is very important as well.
